Gasoline Price Hike Still under Discussion: Iran's Govt. Spox

The Iranian government has no immediate plans to raise gasoline prices, a spokesperson said Tuesday, though she acknowledged the need for a broader review of the issue.

“There is no doubt we need to reach a clear decision on gasoline, but now is not the time,” government spokeswoman Fatemeh Mohajerani told reporters at a news conference.

Asked about the possibility of higher prices for high-income households, Mohajerani said the matter requires “more discussion and review” before any decision is made.

She noted that the current price is the same for all drivers, including those taking off-road vehicles on recreational trips. “We are happy about people’s leisure activities,” she said. “But is it fair to use the energy subsidies of low-income groups in this way? This approach certainly needs revision.”

Mohajerani stressed that the price issue is only “a topic under discussion” and that there is no definitive plan, decision or agreement to raise gasoline prices. However, she urged the media to foster debate on the matter.

“When we talk about cash support for the lowest three income deciles or in-kind subsidies for up to seven deciles, we should ask whether it’s right to allocate their share of energy subsidies like this,” she said.

The spokesperson added that President Masoud pezeshkian “is the president for all Iranians, whether wealthy or low-income,” but said that disadvantaged groups need greater attention and support, and that more programs are planned to assist them. - Shana
