Iran Raises Gasoline Price

Government spokeswoman said the price of gasoline purchased at pumps with unrestricted fuel cards rose to IRR 100,000 (44.84 cents) per liter, effective at dawn on Sept. 8.

Fatemeh Mohajerani said subsidized quotas remain unchanged, including 60 liters at IRR 15,000 (0.67 cent) per liter and 50 liters at IRR 30,000 (1.34 cent) per liter. She said the adjustment applies only to fuel bought through station cards and is aimed at rebalancing supply and demand amid a widening deficit in the fuel distribution network.

“As promised to the people, the subsidized rates will not change,” Mohajerani said.

She cited previous policies that boosted consumption and created an imbalance between supply and demand, adding that the price correction is necessary to sustain distribution and strengthen national resilience.

On the supply side, Mohajerani said the government has increased domestic production to maximize use of available capacity. On the demand side, she said authorities are simultaneously pursuing public transportation improvements and expanding compressed natural gas, or CNG, infrastructure.

Although expert meetings considered various figures, she said the final 100,000-rial rate aligns with the president’s commitment to the public.

Mohajerani said that according to data from the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Co., 85% of the population will meet their monthly fuel needs through the combined 110-liter quota. She said all revenue from the price change will be directed to public welfare support, with regular reports to be issued on the use of those funds. - Shana
