Egypt, Rosatom Smart Utilities Discuss Seawater Desalination Project

Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat discussed the latest developments on a project to establish an integrated seawater desalination project at the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant site with Rosatom Smart Utilities, according to a statement.

During a meeting held via video conference with Ksenia Sukhotina, General Director of Rosatom Smart Utilities, both sides reviewed the standards, regulations, and technical requirements for the joint project, as well as the next steps to finalize its technical and economic solutions.

They also addressed ways to leverage Rosatom’s technologies and specialized expertise in seawater desalination.

The project aims to derive maximum economic and environmental benefit from the desalination system by studying and utilizing the salts and minerals extracted from the desalination process byproducts. These materials could support the development of related industries and projects, subject to technical and economic feasibility studies.

Esmat said the seawater desalination facility will secure the water supplies needed for the Dabaa area while supporting the state’s sustainable development plans. The integrated system is expected to contribute to urban expansion and economic and industrial activity in the surrounding area.

On the sidelines of the 18 BRICS Summit recently held in New Delhi, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin explored enhancing cooperation between Egypt and Russia across various fields.

The two leaders touched upon key projects, particularly the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant and the Russian Industrial Zone in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE), in addition to joint projects in energy, trade, investment, food security, and tourism.
