Egypt Studies Doubling Electricity Supplies to Libya

Egypt is considering doubling its electricity supplies to Libya by raising the interconnection capacity to around 2,000 megawatts through a new transmission line, with an estimated investment of EGP 10 billion, Asharq Bloomberg reported, citing an Egyptian government official.

The project is being jointly studied by the two countries and will require strengthening Libya’s power grid and expanding Egypt’s Marsa Matruh substation to accommodate the additional supplies.

The project is expected to take around two years to complete once studies are finalized and Libya’s grid is confirmed ready.

Egypt and Libya are currently connected by an electricity interconnection line, as Cairo recently resumed electricity exports to Libya following a widespread power crisis that took several plants and transmission lines offline, reducing generating capacity by around 1,350 megawatts.
