Waha Oil Co. Restores Well Q27-71, Adds to Libya Oil Output

Waha Oil Company reported that its Drilling and Well Maintenance Department completed the rehabilitation of Well Q27-71 in the South Daffa area. The well was successfully restored to operational readiness after 8 years of inactivity.

The company said the achievement bolsters its efforts to reactivate idle wells and boost production rates. It also says it was a new technical achievement reflecting the competence of Waha Oil Company’s workforce and their ability to execute highly complex operations.

The well had been out of service since January 2018 due to the failure and subsequent entrapment of its Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) downhole. This incident resulted in the loss of 101 joints of 3.5-inch production tubing, the ESP unit itself, and approximately 3,250 feet of flat power cable, triggering one of the most complex extraction and rehabilitation operations undertaken by the company.

In June 2026, the Drilling and Well Maintenance Department commenced "fishing" operations using the "Fayyad Barqan 9" rig, in collaboration with Al-Duroob Company. The team faced significant technical challenges requiring precise engineering solutions and specialized work plans. Technical teams persisted with efficiency and determination until they successfully retrieved all trapped equipment—most notably the ESP—and completed the well's rehabilitation, restoring it to operational status.

Adding 480 barrels of oil per day

Restoring the well to production is expected to add approximately 480 barrels of oil per day, thereby boosting output, enhancing asset utilization efficiency, and supporting the company’s plans to ensure production sustainability and maximize returns from its fields.
