Chinese Cranes Modernise Iraq's Ports

The General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI) has launched a significant digital transformation by integrating what it describes as "advanced fifth-generation (5G) smart equipment" into its operational infrastructure, marking a major step toward full automation in Iraq's maritime sector.

According to Director General Dr. Eng. Farhan Al-Fartousi, the company received a new batch of high-tech equipment, including 14 cranes - four gantry cranes and ten RTG (rubber-tyred gantry) cranes - manufactured by China's Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC) to international specifications.

The cranes are equipped with intelligent communication systems fully integrated with central management platforms, enhancing container handling efficiency, reducing wait times, and improving overall operational performance.

The new equipment will be deployed at the recently upgraded Turning Basin berths, supplied by Al-Loren Company.

This initiative is part of a strategic plan to replace all outdated equipment with smart systems. The Ports Authority has also begun enforcing technical standards requiring all joint-operation contractors to adopt modern technologies aligned with the company's competitiveness goals.

Future phases will include the integration of smart container tracking systems, remote-controlled safety mechanisms, and full digital infrastructure - further reducing human intervention and aligning Iraq's ports with international standards.

These developments position Iraq to become a regional logistics hub and a modern maritime gateway, reflecting growing trade volumes and demand for advanced port services.
