Iran to Complete Construction of Major Tunnel in Tajikistan

The Istiqlol (Independence) Tunnel, a five-kilometer-long tunnel under construction by Iranian engineers in Tajikistan, is scheduled to be completed ahead of the 32nd anniversary of Independence Day of Tajikistan. The tunnel, aka Anzob Tunnel or Ushtur Tunnel, is located 80 km northwest of Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe.

According to Tajikistan’s Ministry of Transport, the completion of the Istiqlol Tunnel, which connects the central part to the northern part of the country, will be completed before Independence Day. Tajikistan announced independence from the former Soviet Union 28 years ago on September 9, 1991. Each year, the day is celebrated as the Independence Day of Tajikistan.

The report also said that the construction operation was primarily planned to be completed before the end of November 2022. But for financial reasons, the implementation period of the project was extended, the ministry argued. The construction of the tunnel is being conducted by the Iranian company Farab Group, which had earlier cooperated with another Iranian company named Saber International in carrying out the construction project. - IRNA
