Generating electricity from renewable sources prevented the emission of Green House Gases (GHG) in Iran by 100,000 tons during the seventh Iranian calendar month Mehr (September 23-October 22), IRNA reported. Electricity generation from renewables in the mentioned period has led to economizing on the consumption of natural gas by 44 million cubic meters and water by 34 million liters in the said month. As reported, 156 million kilowatts of electricity have been generated from the renewable sources in the seventh month. Renewables account for about 7% of Iran’s total power generation, versus natural gas’ 90% share. Based on Iran’s 6th Development Plan (March 2017-22), the country was aiming for 5,000 megawatts (MW) increase in renewable capacity to meet growing domestic demand and expand its presence in the regional electricity market. But in the final year of the plan, only one-fifth of the figure has been achieved. - Tehran Times
