Bahrain is looking at getting expertise from all over the world to implement the latest practices in the building, construction and utilities sectors.Works Minister and Minister in charge of the Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) Fahmi Al Jowder, speaking at the opening of the thirteenth Middle East Corrosion Conference and Exhibition (MECCE) said the adverse effects of the weather in the GCC and Middle East region on the construction and utilities sectors are an issue of concern and could seriously impact infrastructure development."We are glad we are hosting this international event that we hope will address certain issues dealing with the development of the industry," he said.The opening ceremony for the event was attended by senior dignitaries, government officials, organizers, as well as sponsors, exhibitors and speakers. The 3-day event is organized by the Bahrain Society of Engineers in association with the NACE International's West Asia and Africa region and Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, section."While we are looking at what the world has to offer, we are also opening doors to experts from all over the world to come and have a look at our experiences," he said. "This will stand us in good stead for a long time."Speaking on this occasion, society president Majeed Al Gassab said the conference has helped the industry sector in the GCC and the Middle East in attaining and exchanging updated information required for the sector as well as assist in pursuing research to the practice. "Our success is reflected in the increase in delegates attending the event and in the number of technical papers presented over the years," he said. "Several major corporations and organizations have played vital roles in helping us establish a steady dedication from participants."Speaking on behalf of the organizing committee, conference chairman Gasem Al Fallatah said holding the event in Bahrain reflected the importance of this major event and its success in the past. "In 2010 the MECCE witnessed overwhelming response, with more than 80 exhibitors from many local, regional, and international companies, suppliers, manufacturers participated in the exhibition held in parallel with the conference." He said the conference is sponsored by 26 companies with Saudi Aramco as an elite platinum sponsor.Dr. Fallatah said the conference significance stems from deepening communications and exchanging experiences among the participants, through conducting technical workshops and discussing important topics. "Various experts from leading research laboratories, companies and other associations will present papers on topics which have a direct impact on economic growth in the Middle East, with 130 scientific papers being presented, and five technical workshops," he said. - Gulf Daily
