The historic town of Al Ula in Saudi Arabia is hosting the 41st GCC Summit on January 5 as the group begins its fifth decade. With Saudi Arabia's King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud leading the summit, GCC leaders are expected to focus on the economic recovery of member states and the unity of the organization and its future. As the leaders begin to gather the region received the encouraging news of Saudi Arabia and Qatar agreeing to reopen their borders. The countries are expected to sign a declaration at the summit. GCC Secretary General Dr Nayef Falah Mubarak Al-Hajraf earlier affirmed the GCC’s ability to face challenges through collective work and support of the leaders of the member states. He added that the decisions of the forthcoming summit, aiming to support the GCC march, are set to lay the foundation for launching the GCC towards its 5th decade. Dr Al-Hajraf pointed to Saudi Arabia's keenness and endeavor to overcome all kinds of obstructions that have faced the efforts to hold this summit. He referred to the event as confirming the high level of the Saudi diplomacy, the backbone and main pillar of the GCC within its regional and international arena. Al-Hajraf cited that Saudi Arabia’s hosting of nine summits is a proof that the GCC march would proceed towards the desired horizons.In a televised interview with Al-Ekhbariya channel, Dr Al-Hajraf reminded that the GCC countries together own four sovereign funds, which are among the 10 largest funds in the world, adding that these sovereign funds make a great effort in strengthening the global economy through their large and diversified investments. Qatar said Monday that its ruler Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani would attend the GCC summit. The announcement came after Kuwait said there had been a breakthrough in the boycott of Qatar by Saudi Arabia and other GCC and Arab countries since 2017.
